Houses of Distinction, Inc. built their first home in 1997 and in less than a year they had established themselves as a premier builder in Brunswick County.
Thomas Coyte, along with his wife Deb, built their business one house at a time, generating new clients solely through connections provided by ecstatic homeowners.
Tom, a native of Massachusetts, studied Civil Engineering at the prestigious Franklin Institute in Boston before becoming a project superintendent building high schools,
factories and campus buildings for several colleges.
With two partners he owned a large heating, ventilating and air conditioning company doing the mechanical work for many schools, factories, and hospitals.
Moving to Atlanta, he worked as a major property developer for hotels, motels, office complexes, shopping centers, and townhouse developments before leaving
to resume heavy construction work as a Project Manager for U.S. Envirocon.
He has built sewage treatment plants in Iowa, Pennsylvania, Missouri, and Vermont; supervised the foundation for a bridge across the Mississippi,
built a dam in Colorado, a snow ski manufacturing plant in Vermont, and directed 5800 employees while supervising the construction of two bridges
crossing the Niger River. He has an extensive background in residential and commercial mechanical contracting, sewage and water treatment, plumbing,
and HVAC systems. He holds an unlimited General Contractors License in both North Carolina and South Carolina and is a member of the South Brunswick
Islands Home Builders Association, the National Association of Home Builders, Energy Star Energy Homes, and the Better Business Bureau.
Deb Coyte, Tom's partner and wife, graduated from the School of Design North Carolina State, in Raleigh. She reads a set of plans the way most people
read newspapers and has an amazing flair for decorating and color that many clients find invaluable when making decisions regarding cabinetry, flooring,
countertops, paint, and wall coverings.
Jeff Carter, Tom's superintendent has been with Houses of Distinction, Inc. from the "git go", and he knows home building from the inside out.
He's a hands-on man, very capable, and has experience
with every facet of home building, which makes him ideal in a supervisory position. Except that he really needs that hands-on part and insists on working
alongside the foundation and framing crews. Jeff is the 2nd enabler for Houses of Distinction, capable of managing every aspect of the business
whenever Tom and Deb go on vacation or to trade shows to see all the new products.
Rudi Ulrich, Tom's stepson, is the go-to guy for customer satisfaction. Anytime a customer has a problem he is only a phone call away. Anything that can't
be handled right away is brought to Tom's immediate attention. Tom has a vested interest in his houses and long after the keys have been handed over to
the owner, he is there to offer advice, make recommendations, and even run interference for any product that is not performing to satisfaction.
If Tom built it, he stands behind it and every subcontractor is onboard with his philosophy-keep his customers happy.
For customers living elsewhere while their home is being built, be assured that we are on the site daily, being your eyes and ears and making sure things
are done exactly as you specified. If there is ever a question, we are on the phone, faxing or e-mailing information until we are assured that your wishes
are being carried out. Monday through Friday, there is always someone in the office you can talk to who can direct your concerns to the proper person right
away. We use state-of-the-art radios that all of our subcontractors and workers are connected to so there is no delay in getting information back to you.
We enjoy an ongoing relationship with all our subcontractors. They never need to worry about having work as long as they are committed to Tom by turning out
the superior quality he demands. They quickly attain an ingrained sense of how Tom insists things be done and know that they have to keep up-to-date with
any new products that come on the market. Tom is innovative and wants fresh ideas and new techniques brought to his attention so he can share them with
clients and be the first to implement them.
